The Name Server is a Computer that has DNS Software Installed on it. It manages the connections between your Domain Names and the various Computers/Servers that are being used for the services associated with the the linked domain names.
Every web site has at least two name servers to which it is pointed, and this process must be done by the webmaster upon purchasing a domain and a hosting account.
Example:
The web browser tries to access firm-media.com. like so
- the browser contacts the registrar to see where firm-media.com's Name Servers are.
In our case that is Media Temple's Name Servers: ns1.mediatemple.net and ns2.mediatemple.net - On Media Temple's Name Servers there is a DNS zone file. This has a DNS Record that says firm-media.com is hosted on a server with the IP address of: 216.70.80.18
- The Browser now requests to pull the content located on that server for the url that was. input into the browser.
- The Web Browser renders html and displays firm-media.com's Home Page.
